Box 413 Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53201-0413 Office Hours: By Appointment Phone : 414-229-6929 (Office) or 414-229-4707 (SOIS Office) E-mail: HYPERLINK "mailto:amyccary@sois.uwm.edu" amyccary@sois.uwm.edu Description: This course explores technology issues facing archivists today, addressing technology and its uses in collection management, arrangement and description, reference, digitization, and electronic records. Prerequisites: Graduate standing. SOIS 681 (P) or permission of instructor Objectives: It is important to have knowledge of specific technologies, but technology changes so quickly that it is essential to have a framework for understanding HOW and WHY and WHEN technology is best used in an archives setting. This course focuses on the practical implications of technology in an archives and leads students to consider the wider context of its use. Students will seek to answer questions such as how do I go about formatting a digitization project? Why should I put my finding aids online? When is it more practical to use a traditional form of storage (like microfilm) versus develop a digital archive? Through course discussion that focuses on emerging technologies used in archives, followed by course discussion about the issues that these technologies and their use in archives implies, students will gain an understanding of the impact that technology has on archives administration. Students will develop a solid background knowledge of the issues involved in technologies used in archives. They will become aware of resources to enable them to make sound decisions as archival administrators when determining how to maximize the use of technology within their own repositories. Method: This course will be taught online, and will be based primarily on discussion of readings, current topics in archives technology, multiple short writing assignments, and a final examination. The instructor will also invite virtual guests to participate in online chats and weekly discussions as appropriate. Plagairism: In accordance with University policy (see the appropriate part of the HYPERLINK "http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/Grad_Sch/Publications/HandBook/Administrative/index.html" \l "StudentConduct" \o "http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/Grad_Sch/Publications/HandBook/Administrative/index.html#StudentConduct" Graduate Student and Faculty Handbook), plagiarismin assignments, exams, or other class contributions will not be tolerated. This includes uncited cutting and pasting from Internet resources. Evidence of plagiarism will be handled within the guidelines of Student Academic Disciplinary Procedures of the Wisconsin Administrative Code ( HYPERLINK "http://folio.legis.state.wi.us/cgi-bin/om_isapi.dll?clientID=47234300&infobase=code.nfo&jump=ch.%20uws%2014" http://folio.legis.state.wi.us/cgi-bin/om_isapi.dll?clientID=47234300&infobase=code.nfo&jump=ch.%20uws%2014). If you are unsure about the definition of plagiarism, see the Golda Meir Librarys tutorial at HYPERLINK "http://www.uwm.edu/Libraries/courses/searchpath/mod6/04-plagiarism.html" http://www.uwm.edu/Libraries/courses/searchpath/mod6/04-plagiarism.html Assignments and Grading: Students will be graded on the following: Class Participation 20% 20 Points 3 Short Papers (5 - 7 pages each) 30% 30 Points (10 points each) On Site Archives Interview 15% 15 Points Final Exam 35% 35 Points TOTAL 100% 100 Points Scale: 100 95 = A 94 90 = A- 89 87 = B+ 86 = 83 = B 82 80 = B- 79 77 = C+ 76 73 = C 72 = 70 = C- 69 67 = D+ 66 63 = D 62 60 = D- Participation: Class attendance is measured through participation in discussions and evidence of completing the reading assignments. Participation will constitute 20% of the final grade. Although personal concerns may arise that cause students to participate at varying levels each week, any student who misses more than two of our weekly discussions will not pass the course. Class participation will be evaluated not only on whether or not a student has weighed in on the discussion topic, but will also be evaluated on whether or not a student has added their ideas to the discussion. Me too! and I agree with what everyone else has said do not count as true participation! It is UWM policy that no student will be discriminated against because of race, color, creed, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, ancestry, age, pregnancy, marital or parental status, political affiliation or belief, arrest or conviction records or disabled veteran or Vietnam era veteran status. It is expected that mutual respect will be practiced in this course with regard to these factors as well as with regard to issues of academic freedom. It is the goal of the class that everyone feel comfortable in fully participating in all discussions. Short Papers: Students will be asked to explore one area of interest of their choosing regarding key areas in the class: Collection Management and Archives Administration, Arrangement and Description, Reference, Digitization Projects and Electronic Records. The goal of these papers is for students to provide an in depth analysis of one current issue in the technology area and to discuss how archives can respond to that issue. See CONTENT section of the course website for a fuller description. On Site Archives Interview: Students will be asked to visit an archives in their area (if they work in a repository, not their own!) and discuss with the archivist there the impact that technology (or lack thereof) is currently having on the workflow and projects being completed at the archives. See CONTENT section of the course website for a fuller description. Final Exam: The final exam will be take home and will be situational in nature, asking the student to evaluate a hypothetical situation regarding the use of technologies in archives and make recommendations regarding a possible course of action. Special Accommodations: Students with special needs are encouraged to discuss them with the instructor as soon as possible. Late Assignments: All assignments should be turned in on time. Late assignments will be marked down. If there are extenuating circumstances that require you to submit an assignment after its due date, please discuss this with the instructor as early as possible. Readings: Weekly readings will be available online and via e-reserve.
